INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PROFESSIONAL, VOCATIONAL AND WORK PLACE LEARNING 23-26th June Larnaca and Asgata Cyprus
This major international symposium was organized by the Institute of Work Based Learning at Middlesex University, European University, Frederick University and the University of Nicosia and was hosted by Intercollege, Larnaca. The aim was to bring together professionals and academics to exchange ideas on issues of current concern on work place developments, professional and vocational education and qualifications, specifically focusing on how these might increase economic productivity. The symposium provided a forum for practitioners and academics through workshops and presentation of research papers. Keynote speakers at the conference were:
Emeritus Professor David Boud, UTS, Sydney
Dr. Abdulla Al Karam, the Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai (KHDA).
Professor Carol Costley, IWBL Middlesex University
Professor Chris Winch, Kings College London
The symposium was enhanced by a rich social programme which included an evening reception on 23rd June at Intercollege, and a traditional fish meze supper on the first night of the conference in Larnaca town. Delegates also enjoyed a closing dinner hosted by the Asgata community following an additional one day extension to the conference which was held in the village. The closing day of the conference focused on the philosophical issues related to work based and vocational education learning, chaired by Professor Chris Winch of Kings College London and Chair of the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain.
The conference was the first to address the impact of the economic downturn on professional and vocational education and focused on the way in which economies of different sizes and constitution can engage through education in the workplace and in academic institutions to improve the well-being of their communities and their national wealth.
